Christmas DIY - Sustainable Christmas Decor with Dried Citrus Fruits

The festive season is just around the corner, and what could be a better way to welcome it than with a cozy afternoon, a steaming cup of tea, and a DIY project that fills the entire house with a wonderfully Christmassy scent?

We have a timeless favorite for you that's easy to prepare and offers you the opportunity to get creative in various ways: dried citrus fruits! We present to you three ideas that will take your sustainable Christmas to a new level.

Drying Citrus Fruits

Regardless of which project you choose, they all start with drying your favorite citrus fruits. We're using oranges, but for more color, you can also use lemons or limes.

  • Step 1: Slice the fruits thinly (about 4-5 mm).
  • Step 2: Line your baking sheet with parchment paper and place the slices on it without touching.
  • Step 3: Bake the slices for about 4 hours at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius, flipping them every 1-2 hours. Some slices may dry faster than others; in that case, you can simply remove them and continue baking the others.
  • Step 4: Allow your citrus fruits to cool before using them for your DIY project.

Have you dried and cooled your citrus fruits? Perfect! Now you can let your creativity run wild!

1) Enhance Gifts

Grab some baking or newspaper paper to wrap your gift. Now it's time for your dried fruits: Thread a colorful string through one or two slices and tie a bow - voila! Your gift will shine in festive glory. While you're at it, enjoying a cup of tea, why not take the tea bag with an uplifting message and use it to decorate your gift?

2) Christmas Tree Ornaments

Adorn your Christmas tree with a touch of nature and sustainability. Attach the dried citrus fruits to the branches of your tree with a thin ribbon or string. Their vibrant colors and delightful scent will make your home even more festive! If you like, you can also add pine branches or cinnamon sticks. This will make your decoration even more diverse and appealing.

3) Table Decoration

Use your creative skills to decorate the dining table. Place the dried citrus fruits around candle holders or lay them on napkins to create an elegant table setting. You can also take a glass, place the citrus fruits inside, and then put a candle on top.

Whether you're enhancing gifts, decorating your Christmas tree or home, or setting the table, the vibrant colors and pleasant scent will create a festive atmosphere in your home. Try out these DIY ideas to fully enjoy the holiday season while also being environmentally friendly. Merry Christmas!
